Is Prilo or DebateOwl better value for debate practice?
Both cover Lincoln-Douglas and Public Forum. Prilo NSDA adds Policy, a 3-minute cross-examination simulator, speech analytics and an evidence library, for $15 a month or $60 a year. DebateOwl costs $5 a month after a 3-day free trial, works in English, Spanish and Hungarian, writes a whole case with "If they say… we answer…" replies, and runs full timed rounds in School 4-6-6-3, Lincoln-Douglas and Public Forum that end in a judge's verdict. The ledger below lines them up.
The ledger
Ten lines, as of November 2026. Prilo's column comes from prilo.ai and its sign-up page; DebateOwl's from its own app and price.
| Prilo NSDA | DebateOwl | |
|---|---|---|
| Formats it practises | Lincoln-Douglas, Public Forum and Policy, each with its own sparring, cross-examination and flowing workflows. R1 | Full timed rounds in School 4-6-6-3, Lincoln-Douglas and Public Forum. Case and reply tools for any motion, with British Parliamentary, World Schools, Policy and Congress among the format settings. |
| A practice round | The AI Sparring Partner writes a rebuttal to the case you type or speak, for either side, with a voice read-back. The pages describe rebuttal practice, not a round with every speech. R1 | Sparring runs every speech in order at its real time, against an AI opponent, typed or spoken, and ends with a verdict and a score per category. |
| Cross-examination | CX Simulator: load your case, start a 3-minute clock and answer questions written for your format. R1 | Crossfire: it questions you one question at a time, or you question it. |
| Writing the case | PriloGPT answers strategy questions, and CardCut turns pasted text into a cited evidence card to check. R1 | The case generator writes the whole case in speaking order, with "If they say… we answer…" replies; one weak section can be rewritten alone. |
| How you sound | Speech Analytics: words per minute, filler words and vocal variety. R1 | Judged from your words only. DebateOwl does not score pace or fillers. |
| Languages | Its NSDA pages are in English and name no other language. | English, Spanish and Hungarian, from the menus to the case and the opponent. |
| Monthly price | $15 a month. R2 | $5 a month, plus tax. |
| Yearly price | $60 a year, paid once. R2 | No yearly plan. |
| Free trial | None named; sign-up goes from account to plan to checkout. R2 | 3 days, no credit card. |
| Free without a plan | NSDA resources: event guides, topic analysis, competition calendars and how-to guides. R3 | A debate timer, motion generator, flow sheet and speech-time calculator, with no account. |
Pick Prilo if…
…you compete on the American circuit in Lincoln-Douglas, Public Forum or Policy and want a drill for each skill a tournament tests: a 3-minute cross-examination against the clock, flowing at speeds that build up to nationals pace, feedback on your pace and filler words, and a library for cutting evidence cards. Policy debaters especially: DebateOwl has no Policy practice round. If you will train all season, its $60 yearly plan costs a third of twelve monthly payments.
Pick DebateOwl if…
…you want the whole case written and then a whole round to say it in, from the first speech to the last, with a verdict that tells you what to fix. Pick it too if you debate in Spanish or Hungarian, debate the School 4-6-6-3 format, or want to try before you pay: the trial asks for no card, and the plan is monthly, with no year to commit to.
Reading the ledger fairly
Prilo's tools are drills: each takes one part of a round and repeats it. DebateOwl's centre is the round: the case comes first, the questions next, the full timed round last. A debater with both would use Prilo for flowing and pace, and DebateOwl for the case and the full run.
Prilo also makes study tools for DECA, FBLA, HOSA and World Scholar's Cup; the NSDA plan is its debate product, priced on its own. R4
Try the round before you pay
Put your next motion into DebateOwl and run the round in the 3-day trial. DebateOwl's home page shows the tools; which AI is best for debate covers the rest of the field.
The DebateOwl app has no free plan (3-day free trial, then $5/month); the separate timer, motion generator, flow sheet and speech-time calculator are free with no account.
More side-by-sides: DebateOwl vs DebateThis for a first-time debater, and DebateOwl vs Debatable for voice rounds.
