What DebateOwl covers

DebateOwl is built for the middle of debate prep: the case, the replies to the other side, and practice saying both under a clock. These parts are in the app today:

  • A case you can read out loud. The case generator writes it in the order you would say it: an opening, two to four arguments (each with an explanation, evidence and why it matters), a closing line and the sources it used.
  • "If they say X, we answer Y" replies. Each case includes "If they say… we answer…" answers to the other side. The second speech brings no new arguments: about two minutes reinforcing yours, then about four minutes of those replies.
  • Timed practice rounds. Sparring runs School 4-6-6-3, Lincoln-Douglas and Public Forum against an AI opponent and ends with a verdict. Crossfire drills questioning.
  • Free tools, no account. A debate timer, a motion generator, a flow sheet and a speech time calculator, separate from the app.
  • $5/month. After the 3-day trial, Pro is $5/month + tax. See pricing.

The same workspace also has Attack (find weak points), Brainstorm, Factoids (evidence with citations), Ask (coach chat), a Library, a timer and a flowchart. It works in English, Spanish and Hungarian and exports to Word, PDF and Google Docs.

Three limits are worth stating. Sparring does not run a full World Schools or BP round, so those formats use the prep tools. Evidence leads still need checking against the original source. And DebateOwl is not an argument-mapping board or a class management dashboard, so for those jobs the table points elsewhere.

The other tools, job by job

Research: Perplexity and Gemini

Perplexity answers questions from the web and shows inline citations for each claim. The free plan is for limited daily use; Pro is $17/month billed annually. Google's US plans page lists Deep Research in Gemini's free plan, alongside paid Google AI plans with higher limits. Either one is a fast way to find background and statistics on a motion. Open the cited page before you quote it in a round.

Drafting: Claude and ChatGPT

Claude's free plan includes web search; its Research feature is on paid plans, and Pro is $20/month billed monthly or $17/month billed annually. ChatGPT is free to use with web search, and Study mode on every plan asks Socratic-style questions and works toward the answer with you step by step. ChatGPT Plus is $20/month. Both write a first draft from a good prompt. See DebateOwl vs ChatGPT and DebateOwl vs Claude.

How to make a general model a better opponent

  • Assign it the other side explicitly.
  • Tell it not to concede unless your answer actually beats the point.
  • Ask for one specific weak point at a time.

Rebuttals: Prilo NSDA

Prilo NSDA is Prilo's debate product for LD, PF and Policy. It has an AI sparring partner for rebuttals, a three-minute cross-examination simulator, flowing drills and an evidence card library. It costs $15/month, or $60/year at a 50% early-access price (normally $120/year). Prilo states that it is not affiliated with the National Speech & Debate Association.

Argument mapping: Kialo Edu and Symbai

Kialo Edu is a discussion platform for teachers and students where each pro and con sits under the point it answers, so the whole argument becomes a map. Kialo says it is completely free, with no premium features. Symbai combines argument mapping and debate in a drag-and-drop canvas with an AI opponent, and offers a free trial.

Timed practice: Debatable, PublicForumAI and ranked ladders

Debatable's AI rounds are spoken, end with a written decision, and include live rounds with people for free. Free accounts get 10 AI voice minutes after sign-in, about one round. Individual is $10 a year and a school program is $200 a season for the whole roster. PublicForumAI covers Public Forum: cases, flows and full practice rounds with AI feedback and a chosen winner. Practice is free; $9.99/month removes the round limit and adds sourced evidence.

Ranked ladders suit debaters who want reps and a rating. Debate Ladder is voice-first: you argue PRO or CON out loud, an AI judge scores logic, responsiveness, clarity, delivery and persuasiveness, and ranked wins raise an Elo that starts at 500. DebateThis is a free-to-play three-round arena against people or eight AI bots, with Elo tiers. On ArguFight, you trade short written arguments with other debaters, three AI judges each give a score from 0 to 100, and it is free to start.

Classroom: SchoolAI

SchoolAI teachers build AI "Spaces" for a lesson and follow each student live in Mission Control. The pricing page lists FERPA, COPPA and SOC2 Type 2 compliance. Its Free Trial includes 5 Space launches a year; Pro and Scale plans are priced through sales.

Quick pro and con lists: HyperWrite Debate Assistant

It writes arguments for and against a proposition, with search for supporting facts. HyperWrite has a limited free account, and Premium is $19.99/month.

Compare by question

Each of these pages answers one narrower question:

Which should you pick?

You have a tournament or school debate coming up and need a case you can read out loud, plus practice against the other side. DebateOwl writes that case, with "If they say X, we answer Y" replies, and runs timed sparring. Use Perplexity or Gemini first if you still need background on the motion.

You're a teacher running a class debate. Kialo Edu maps the class's arguments for free; SchoolAI lets you build and watch AI Spaces.

You're new to debate and want someone to argue with tonight. Try Claude or ChatGPT first, then DebateOwl when you want a case and timed rounds.

Can you use AI during a debate round?

Usually not. Most leagues restrict electronics or AI during rounds. Check your league's rules and use AI for preparation.

The DebateOwl app has no free plan (3-day free trial, then $5/month); the separate timer, motion generator, flow sheet and speech-time calculator are free with no account.

Frequently asked questions

Which AI is best for debate?

It depends on the job. Perplexity and Gemini suit research with sources, Claude and ChatGPT suit drafting, Kialo Edu suits argument mapping in class, and DebateOwl suits case prep, "If they say X, we answer Y" replies and timed practice rounds. DebateOwl is paid after a 3-day free trial.

Is ChatGPT good for debate?

Yes, for brainstorming, a first draft and being questioned. It is free to use with web search, and its Study mode asks Socratic-style questions on every plan. Tell it the motion, your side and the speech times in your prompt. For a clocked round in a debate format with a decision at the end, a debate app such as DebateOwl, Debatable or PublicForumAI is built for that.

What is the best free AI for debate practice?

It depends on what you need free, as of November 2026. PublicForumAI has free Public Forum practice rounds. Debatable has free live rounds with people and 10 free AI voice minutes. DebateThis is free to play, and Debate Ladder gives 100 free credits. Kialo Edu is free for mapping arguments. DebateOwl's app is paid after a 3-day trial; its debate timer and motion generator are free.

Which AI do debate coaches use?

We have no survey of what coaches use, so here is what each tool offers a coach. Kialo Edu is free and students can join with only a name. SchoolAI lets a teacher watch students live. Debatable sells a $200 season license for a whole roster. DebateOwl gives a squad cases, replies and timed rounds, and its free timer works on a projector.

What does a DebateOwl case include?

An opening, two to four arguments each with an explanation, evidence and why it matters, "If they say X, we answer Y" replies, a closing line and the sources it used. It is written in the order you would say it.

Can AI replace practicing with real people?

No. It's useful for extra reps and finding weak points, but human opponents and judges are still unpredictable in ways AI isn't. Use both.
